How Do Scotchguard And Other Similar Products Work On Carpet

If you have every spilled something on your carpeting, then the odds that you have heard of scotchgard are pretty good.  Scotchgard is a protectant that, when applied to your carpeting, makes cleaning things up much easier.  The spray is truly a magical invention of modern technology and the best part is it is invisible once applied.  Some carpet companies even have the scotchgard applied to the material they use so that makes it easier for you to keep them clean once the carpeting is installed in your home.  So, basically, scotchgard is an invisible spray that does not affect the way your carpeting looks or feels and protects it for longer.  Ever since it has been invented, millions of folks have used the product and many of them are wondering, “how does Scotchgard work?”  The short answer is magic, but for the long answer we have to look at a few more things.

This type of product is one of the best things to have in your cleaning cabinet.  Basically, Scotchgard is a water and stain repellant developed back in 1952.  The solution has been put into many other cleaning products since then and even added to materials, like those that are used to make carpeting.  The solution actually protects each and every single fiber that it comes in contact with from water and other stains.  When the solution was invented, it was using an ingredient called, perfluorooctane sulfonate.  When that was applied to a material, the material fibers became resistant to stains and water.  For the last 10 years or so, the company was forced to use another chemical due to the danger of using the perfluorooctane sulfonate.  The bad side of using another chemical different from the original is that it will not last as long on the material.

Even though Scotchgard and other carpet cleaning solutions will help to clean the fabric and might even repel water like magic, the solutions will not make your carpet or furniture last forever.  Scotchgard does not prevent a stain from setting into your carpet, but it does prolong that process giving you extra time to get it cleaned up.  Since Scotchgard has been developed, there have been many other products that do a similar service for your carpeting, but might not be quite as good.  For the most part they have similar ingredients, but because they are not the same exactly, they do not last as long or do as good of a job.  There are many other things that you can use the Scotchgard on including, canvas shoes, bath mats, oven mitts, tablecloths and even bathroom floors.

Taking a quick look at the official Scotchgard FAQ page and you can see what some of the more common questions are.  One common question is how long does the Scotchgard Protector last?  If you are using the product as it is intended, it will last a very long time.  If you clean your carpets on a regular basis using a shampoo vacuum that has hot water extraction, this will take away the overall life of the protectant.  It would then make sense to apply the protectant after each time that you clean your carpets for best results.

Because the protectant is water resistant on your carpet, many might wonder why water does not bead up on the carpet surface after it has been applied.  Just like the many carpet cleaners that are on the market, each carpet fiber is woven a little different.  Because of that, water is absorbed differently for each, however, if you have Scotchgard applied, the stain will still be resisted long enough to give you a chance at cleaning it up.  Scotchgard is safe to use around pets and children, which makes it very versatile to use.  If you are wondering whether or not a product that you are buying has Scotchgard already applied to it, just look for the Scotchgard Protector label.  That way you know you have the best, quality, water resistant applied to it.
